Loaves & Fishes began in July, 1983 as a joint effort of 16 local churches. The name came from Matthew 14 which tells of Jesus' feeding of the 5000.
It is located on Evergreen, between 2nd St. and 3rd St. in the basement of the City of Durant’s Wheeler Building and is open from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm every week day.
Volunteers from First Baptist work at the store for one week approximately every three months. Each church is assigned a food item to collect each quarter. Monetary donations are also welcomed.
Items are distributed according to family size. Each family receives 1) approximately 25 different food items, 2) a copy of the story of Jesus' feeding of the 5000 and 3) a Bible if they need one.
The purpose of Loaves & Fishes is to minister to those who need temporary help until permanent help can be secured or to help those in a crisis situation such as a house fire or loss of job.
If a person needs help, he may contact Big Five community services who verifies the need OR in an emergency situation, one may contact a pastor whose church is involved in the Loaves & Fishes program.
If you would like to volunteer and be placed on the working schedule, contact the church office.
